A reimagining of Sesame Street’s all-time best-selling picture book “The Monster at the End of This Book,” the special follows Grover’s reluctant journey to the end of the story, where, based on the title, he believes a monster awaits. Drawn in the unmistakable style of the beloved book first published in 1971, the special adds new sequences, songs and surprises, and introduces other familiar Sesame Street characters, including Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Cookie Monster, and Rosita, to the tale.
The animation was created in Adobe Animate with additional effects and compositing in Adobe After Effects. A Productions shared animation duties with a team at Sesame Workshop. It was composited and edited in our Bristol studio with post production and sound handled by Films@59.
The production was made particularly challenging as the UK and USA both went into lockdown for Covid. Despite this, with the help of or tech department, our teams were able to transition to working from home for a number of month. The project was delivered on time and broadcast on HBOMax.
The Monster at the End of this Story was nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing and Sound Editing for a Preschool Animated Program at the 2021 Emmy Awards. The spin off YouTube short was also nominated for Outstanding Short Form Children’s Program.
